6 Ways Others Are Helping Me Process a Trump Presidency

I ran away from home yesterday. My body reached maximum anger-holding capacity. I needed to get away from people and social media and have a come-to-Jesus moment with… well…Jesus.

My therapist tells me anger is a product of other emotions. I hate it when she’s right. Since Donald Trump was elected; fear, betrayal, confusion, wrong assumptions, and fear (yes, “fear” is so strong I mentioned it twice) have consumed me.

Luckily, people much smarter than I have figured out methods to process a decision many of us did not see coming. I share them here, hoping you will get as much comfort from them as I did.

#1. The Road Back To You Podcast – Reclaiming Hope: A Conversation with Michael Wear on Politics, the Enneagram, and how America moves Forward I’m a Six. I need assurance. What can I say?

#2. The Robcast – Rob Bell and Pete Rollins Standing Firm Rollins is one of the smartest men I interviewed when on talk radio. I so appreciate his wisdom here.

#3. Carrie Newcomer’s Three Feet or So – When I interviewed Carrie I let her know this is my new theme song. Now I have to live it.

#4. Reading White Trash, by Nancy Isenberg and Hillbilly Elegy, by J.D. Vance – both opened my eyes to a life I don’t know. There is pain in our country.

#5. Jon Stewart on Charlie Rose CBS This Morning Dang, I miss Jon Stewart. Even now, when he convicts me:

“I thought Donald Trump disqualified himself at numerous points. But there is now this idea that anyone who voted for him is — has to be defined by the worst of his rhetoric,” Stewart said. “Like, there are guys in my neighborhood that I love, that I respect, that I think have incredible qualities who are not afraid of Mexicans, and not afraid of Muslims, and not afraid of blacks. They’re afraid of their insurance premiums. In the liberal community, you hate this idea of creating people as a monolith. Don’t look as Muslims as a monolith. They are the individuals and it would be ignorance. But everybody who voted for Trump is a monolith, is a racist. That hypocrisy is also real in our country.”

#6. The Guardian: Why the Poorest County in America Has Faith in Trump – Just another eye opener for me.

I’m still not over my anger, but I’m processing. Slowly processing and moving forward.

How are you understanding America in this time?
