Church Food Bank – Week 50

Our church has a food bank open once a week to the public. Folks in the community contact service organization Care to Share and go through a screening process. Care to Share then delegates families to us to provide a little over a week’s worth of food. It’s the same process that is used for St. Matthew Lutheran’s food bank, only on a smaller scale.
Thursday, the girls and I arrived at the church to help. Unlike the SCAT program at St. Matts, there wasn’t a ton of work to do. The girls went off on their own while I helped another volunteer check in families and pack food.

This gets families through the week.
With the devastating events that have happened in our country during the last 5 days (Seriously? Has it only been 5 days?), I’m finding it tough to find meaning in packing food this week. I hope and wish and pray that the 6 families who showed up on Thursday were relieved to have groceries and that it made their week a little easier.
Tomorrow my family will serve with NCompass for the 4th Annual Christmas Festival for the Homeless. We plan on serving over 1000 of our neighbors living in poverty. The world seems very dark right now. I hope and wish and pray that tomorrow we can bring brightness to some, sharing our love of the One who is the Light of the World.

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12 (NIV)
